Have we got an event for you! The Hands-On Science Center, Lannom Memorial and Manchester Libraries, and Tullahoma Parks and Recreation are proud to present the Nature Journaling and Science Hike at Short Springs State Natural Area!
Participants will meet at the parking area adjacent to the Water Tower at Short Springs, where you will be led on a 2-mile hike starting on Machine Falls Trail by Parks and Rec staff through our beautiful park to Machine Falls. You'll learn how to read a topographic map and hiking/trail etiquette.
Along the way, we'll stop at different intervals where staff from the Lannom and Manchester Libraries will instruct on how to create a nature journal (journals and pencils will be provided, or you may bring your own). Also along the way, staff from the Hands-On Science Center will discuss all things ecosystem and about hydro-power at the Falls, and anything science-related we find on the trail!
We'll go around the Wildflower Loop trail at the Falls and return to the start via the Busby Falls Trail. We're anticipating the entire trek to take between 3-4 hours depending on participant ability levels. This hike is on semi-rugged terrain and does have gradual elevation changes of approximately 160 feet down and up, so it may be slightly strenuous in parts. Participants should be prepared for that along with potential hot weather. If you have questions, you can contact any of the host organizations by phone or email.
We will have two sessions on Saturday, July 14th; the morning session will start at 9am and is for youth and families, and the afternoon session will be for adults 18 and up (hint, hint: great Date Night idea!) beginning at 4pm. There is not a minimum age requirement, however, parents should use discretion if their child can handle the conditions. A rain-out date is proposed for the following Saturday if weather does not cooperate on the 14th.
